I think it's about time AKB stopped relying on the older members to be front row backing up the "new gen" center (jabaja and TwI both did this) as it only promotes one young member at a time. They're most likely worried that when they go on music shows the audience won't know who the front members are; but the camera will find the popular members anyway, it doesn't hurt to give a few girls a chance. They did this with BwT and it didn't end in disaster, though their choice of young member could be questioned. More radically, I think it would be interesting to completely exclude Yukirin, Sasshi, Sayanee, Dasu, Yuihan etc. from a senbatsu and give it all to new members. Even making it a double a-side with a new and old gen senbatsu would be interesting.

Also, what's been annoying me is the constant large senbatsu sizes. Our only relief in the past year has been the ssk single, but I think it'd be nice to see a small management chosen selection for the first time in a few years now. Considering the 52nd single is a summer single, I don't see a small (management selected) senbatsu happening until the 54th, but I can hope. At this rate, at least smaller than 30 would be appreciated for a summer single. This isn't to say I don't enjoy the occasional large senbatsu, I would just prefer a more exclusive group ranging from 16-21 for most singles.

As a final side note, SKE kinda dropped the ball when it came to promoting the "current gen" (members like Mirurun, Sakura, Naachan). Other than Ryoha whose push failed I can't really think of another SKE member in the same generation as Sakura and Naachan who's as popular as them. Yes Nao is in ssk senbatsu, but she doesn't have nearly the amount of recognition and popularity that she should considering SKE barely wants to push her and she is where she is in ssk thanks to wota and hako oshi. And SKE's doing it again by putting all their eggs in one basket (Yunana) like they did with Ryoha. Yes, Rara got a push, but management is dropping her right when the fans are accepting her like they did with Ami and various others.

You know what would be fun, but would also would never be done because it would be a total logistical nightmare and wouldn't be immediately profitable in any way?

If AKB48 did a big concert tour and took all 7 Japanese groups... then made 16 member units out of the whole group decided completely randomly (with each member being removed from the pool once assigned) and had those units perform in the concert.

While the members would get to know who they were going to be working with a week in advance to properly practice and prepare for the performance, but the fans? They wouldn't get to know at all. Which means that everyone would have to pay attention, at least to the beginning of each performance. All anyone would know going in is that it is a 48/46 group concert.

Of course, as totally and completely random would probably not totally work out so well....

Maybe have the girls who come in the top 16 in the senbatsu then go on and do a draft among themselves to make the units for a single.
#1's group would be the senbatsu for the single
#2's group would also appear on all types of the single
and #3-#16's groups would appear on one version of the single

Unfortunately, AKB48 group has gotten so insanely large at this point that 16 groups of 16 would still leave 30 girls out in the cold. Not even counting the recent draftees.

 

@Iizuka-Tengu I did something similar, but instead of just giving each group one song, I randomly assigned a stage to each group of 16 members. It's really old, though.

 

Yeah-- I think this is an indication as to why totally random might not work.

Virtually all fans don't really know or care about 2/3+ of the group. Not so much their fault, but there are 300 members and you can only care about so many. While there may be some people who can name every single member on sight-- its likely they don't really know enough about most for them to be very meaningful.

With a totally random line-up then, the vast majority of formations are going to be primarily made up of no one who really matters to you-- or maybe there will be 1 or 2 people you just barely know. Which ultimately results in what you did and say "screw this noise, I am just assigning them myself."

After all, if we are to pretend the janken tournament is legit-- that's a totally random senbatsu and it does so badly that they started making it a solo debut so they can not count it as an AKB48 single and thus hurt their average sales. (Of course, not selling handshake event tickets with it, which is why AKB48 singles sell 1,000,000 copies instead of 100,000 copies greatly depresses the sales as well.)

And trying to sell a whole stage show on that would obviously be disastrous. However, if it was part of one big concert and no one knows in advance where their Oshimen will be appearing, it would probably be fine. Everyone knows their favorites will appear somewhere, they are already in the door, and even if there is no one they know in a formation then at least they are going to be paying attention long enough to confirm no one they know is there.

The Draft idea probably works out quite a bit better-- and we got that last year when Sashihara, Matsui, Kashiwagi and Watanabe got to each make up their own senbatsu for the album and that worked out much better.

tbh they should really cut Yunana & Mikurin some slack before their push backlashes. pushing them too hard too soon could somehow backlash imo. After all the reason they got to where they are right now is because of their Underdog nature that attracts fans (Yunana with her popular-enough-for-senbatsu-but-somehow-never-senbatsu limbo and Mikurin with her only-senbatsu-to-complete-the-NakoMiku-symmetry narrative). Skipping this one would probably do them more good than harm imo, especially before SSK. doing so could also light a fire under their fans' asses. they could return to senbatsu after SSK.
