@Chubo Continuing from the discussion in Aruno’s thread, I did some searching and it isn’t known. One idea out there is that she is named after Ayanami Rei from Evangelion (whose name is written in katakana). This isn’t too far fetched, Hinatazaka’s Tomita Suzuka is named after the Suzuka Circuit and Sakurazaka’s Kosaka Marino’s given name comes from a metal band. It’s also possible her parents just decided to be unique and use katakana. Hopefully there will be a segment on radio or Kojichuu where she explains it one day.

Just want to take the time to say that- I am so happy and proud for Rei this year. You can really see and feel the growth that she gained through the experiences she made this year. From her 46Hour segment in February, getting her little ''Rei English'' program on YouTube, the two senbatsus and than her role in the movie. I mean look at the thumbnails of the videos two posts above. She just radiates her growth. I hope more and more opportunities will open up for her in the future. Omedetou, Rei-san, you did great this year. (And it's not over yet)
