Finally graduating from middle school, a fresh start from April.

You're finally entering high school this spring.

Yeah! I joined HKT48 right when I entered middle school. These 3 years really went by in a blink of an eye. Such busy 3 years it has been. You really get a wider variety of work when you enter high school, so I feel like entering high school is like entering the next stage in my life.

I see. So your 3 years at middle school was filled with memories of HKT48. Even then, you were especially active this year.

I did a lot of concerts starting with the Kyushu tour. I tend to focus on having fun at the tours. Whether it's setlist or content, I take them lighthearted and playfully, which the audience probably enjoy as well.

There was that Kyushu tour, and then there was the Zenkoku tour, and then there even was the tour abroad.

It seems amazing when you look back like that. I went to all kinds of places, and for most of them it was my first time there. I felt like "Japan's such a big place", and going abroad was such a fresh experience. These were precious expriences.

The team shuffle was announced on the first day of the Kyushu tour and you got separated with Mio.

But I really think that it was good timing. It was the shuffle that made HKT48 as strong as it is now. That's why the Kyushu tour and the Zenkoku tour after were such a success.

The last thing at the Zenkoku tour was the announcement of performing at Yokohama Arena on June 27 and 28.

Isn't Yokohama Arena huge? I've never thought HKT48 would stand on that stage alone, which made me quite worried. Will we be able to entertain the audience at such a large stage?

There hasn't been a large concert near the Tokyo area so there are probably many fans looking forward to this.

I am still thinking about the concert 2 years ago at Budokan. Our first concert was at Budokan, so everyone was all over the place. We won't even know where we were standing because the stage was round... After it was over, we felt really bad and cried a lot as we all knew we didn't do well. That is why this time, although it's not at Budokan, I want to show the audience how much I/we have grown since that concert.
Not only was there the Zenkoku tour's final, there's also the compilation of these 2 years.

However, it means nothing if we end it at Yokohama Arena. I think we also have to do concerts following that.

How do you see yourself now that you are no longer center?

There was your first appearance at last year's Kouhaku.

I was at school when they announced it so I went home without knowing anything. I turned on the tv and I saw Mio at the press conference. That's how I first learned about it. I was so surprised and my mom was just as excited. After all, I was the top batter in the tv show that everyone watches since they were kids. We were to be the ones to start off the last show of New Year's Eve!

I think it was a great performance as the top batter. I was most surprised by how you were able to look directly at the cameras, even the crane cameras. Was that a simple deal for you?

Not at all! I'm usually not the nervous type, but I was super nervous at Kouhaku since it's a special show. However, we decided at rehearsal that "we'll be cheerful and be aggressive when the camera comes" so I gave it all I had. We'll be grateful if even one more person pay attention to HKT48. With only that in my mind, Melon Juice kept repeating my in head as the new year starts.

One more thing. Looking back at last year, the center spot you have kept since the debut has been taken.

Yeah... obviously I was frustrated at that time. I felt like "now's a good chance to reevaluate myself". As I always stood at the same spot, I wasn't able to truly look at myself, so I believe that it was a good experience. It was necessary for continuing on at HKT48.

Not only yourself, but it feels like you were able to look over the whole group from a wider perspective as well.

Hmmm.. that was due to experience. When I first entered HKT48, things were not easy back then. Even when I perform, I didn't make eye contact with anyone beside the 5 or so fans in front of me. Then, I gradually widen my view.
Honestly, you look like you're having more fun than when you're center. It felt like so starting from the Zenkoku tours since fall.

There was a period when I strongly felt that center means the face of HKT48. When my character is about to fall apart, I stopped myself, thinking "I have to do this right!"

And you no longer stop yourself when you left the cruicial center.

Yes, which is why I screw around a bit too much on tv and stuff (lol). I am now able to bring out my true self so to speak. I want to show fans my weird side. Of course I'll be careful not to forget that I'm a idol (lol)!

Seems like leaving the center position had a positive effect. First half of last year was being self conscious as the center, and the second half was just absolute genki. You really shined throughout the year and left a strong impression.

Thank you! Of course, I would love to go back to center someday, and I will work hard to get it, but at that time Kodama-san was the ideal center. When she was chosen, everyone felt that it was only natural as she was so hardworking. That's why when I return to center, I also want people thinking that it's only natural that I'm chosen. That would be ideal.

HKT48 is no longer the youngest group. What will the future be like?

Is that your resolution in 2015? To stop being "the kid"?

Nah, without actually experiencing high school life, there's no way of knowing how the environment will change. It's quite late for New Year's resolution, but I will decide in April. I've decided that I'll experience high school life and come up with my resolution during the month of April.

I've said it just now, but my 3 years in middle school was really rewarding, so I want to be able to lead an even fuller life these 3 years that I can look forward to. Oh, but I do have a goal as an HKT48 member.

So you know how NGT48 starts in October? Until now HKT48 was the "youngest sister" among the 48group and we have the "fresh and genki" image, but that will no longer be the case. Therefore, I think a big goal for HKT48 is to find our new charm point and convey that to the fans.

That is important indeed.

I want to make HKT48 a "colorful" group.
So more than just being fun and cheerful?

I think we are colorful now too, but it seems like members just randomly throw paint at a white wall.

Though I think the fans enjoy that.

But I think that won't fly anymore. Even if we add more color to the wall it will just be a mess, so I think we have to clear the wall, and then recolor it anew, saying "this is HKT48".

That's quite a grand and specific goal.

Anyway I want to be able to point out 3 charm point of HKT48 by fall. 3 charm points that we can really convey to our fans. To do all kinds of work while looking ahead at Yokohama Arena, and to be able to find some after the concert would be great. One year does go by really quickly!

It does. By the time you perform at Yokohama Arena, Sousenkyo would have been over. Time really flies quickly.

Ah the Sousenkyo... my goal last year was to make it into Undergirls, but I wasn't able to, so I would like to achieve that same goal this year. Last year's pressure was intense. The year before, I've just barely entered HKT and was already able to rank, and it was even a very honouring rank, so this year, not only do I want more HKT48 members to rank in, I also want to do my best to not fall behind. I've learned the importance of Sousenkyo's ranking from Sakura-chan.

Wow, she's got a lot of great thoughts and I hope she and HKT are able to achieve their goals! I'm glad as well that Haruppi was made center because as was pointed out, it really was a positive experience for Meru. She definitely deserves UG center!

Meru is so ambitious and wise for her age. I am so happy when I am able to listen to every work she speaks.

I REALLY WANT HER TO REACH THAT UNDERGIRLS RANK! CENTER WOULD BE BEAUTIFUL AS WELL.

I find it so awe inspiring that she umderstands others back stories and build on that. She is so precious and caring. She understood the pressures of center and the love ❤ the fans had for haruppi being center. The fact she can gauge the feeling is so inspiring. She wants the title back and I want her to have it as well. She feels she still needs growth so I will wait till not only management but the rest of HKT fandom patiently waits for her return as well.

My comment is going to sound unoriginal but I can't help but echo the sentiment. This is why she's my oshimen, I can't help but be inspired and uplifted by her positive attitude. If this 15 year old girl can see a way out of a rut, a way to advance and be rewarded for her work, well then, what excuse do I have?

I really love what she says about HKT48 too. They can't be the "fresh young" group forever especially when another group is about to take the 'freshness' from them. They're going to have to establish an edge that can't be easily taken away just like their sister groups and Nogizaka have done.

I feel the same; I think they're fine just the way they are and NGT should be the one's to adjust and not crowd HKT's image.

^I'm not worried if NGT becomes the new 'Young Group' because I think 'young' is not what made HKT48 so popular quickly. I think it's their Kyushu flare. Just like Osaka was its persona of comedians, Kyushu girls I'd would describe as perky.

No. Because there was no broadcast of the performances. And it is much, much to soon for DVD/BRD release, If there will be one.
