Wow that was very energetic and upbeat. They definitely went hard for the 80s hip hop influenced choreo and I appreciate it. I also did not see the jazz split ending coming instead of the usual regrouping around the center.

NMB did it that way with great results so maybe AKB will use K-pop techniques.

I hope the girls now realize one of their strengths in comparison to Nogizaka's is versatility. Their A-sides alone are so diverse with many musical styles, the melodies of the majority of which are catchy and memorable.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders, thinking there's anything to get.

Were people actually calling it modern lol. Maybe the dance is modern, but yeah the music is old.

I'm a bit late to the party but I was so excited for when the song came out! I'm so happy for Naachan, too. I already said this in her own thread, but I didn't like Jabaja and it was also pushed aside so quickly... I really felt it wasn't fair. I expected a Zukkii center after they showed her all upset in the "Defeated by Nogizaka" show, so I feel bad for Zukkii as well but hopefully she'll be given more opportunities in the future. Also, I'm hoping she'll get a b-side center.

I really like the song, and I was super impressed with the dance. I agree that the dance part where they move their legs really high during the "rumour rumour rumour" part is weird, but apart from that I love it. Yokochan has been a lowkey favourite of mine for a long time; this is mostly based on a biased opinion because I'm a Tano Yuka oshi, and Tanochan really appreciated Yokochan's talent. Her and Yasuda Kana are the little ones I like to watch out for and hope they will receive better opportunities. Yokochan's push lately has been insane and I'm really happy for her.

Putting Yokochan and Hiichan on either side of Naachan was a really smart move for the choreography. There's a lot of good dancers in here. Also, giving Naachan and also Hiichan quite a lot of a solo lines was smart for the sound of the song. It shows to me that management wants to put more emphasis on the members' talents again. I remember watching AKB48 on a TV programme a few months ago and the senbatsu was full of cute and pretty girls, but I remember being horrified at the vocals. This also happened around the same time Nona Diamonds performed "Hajimari no Uta" for the first time...

    Anyway. AKB48 seems to be moving ahead based on the chosen positions for each member. And also based on the lyrics! @kachuushaa on twitter has translated the TV version's lyrics. I'll copy down a passage;

"We haven't seen each other in a while, I've never looked better
    "I can't believe you called me a rouge-wearing woman
"Because at that time, I still wore a ponytail and shushu
"I couldn't bring myself to say anything, so I just walked by"

    https://twitter.com/kachuushaa/status/1416323398762778625

This is somewhat subtle, but to me, the lyrics talk about how AKB48 has just been letting time fly by while keeping up with their old image. Now they're coming back and leaving behind the image created by the senpais!

I also want to show everyone the detail that went into the individual costumes. Someone else has already linked it in this thread, but I'd like people to actually look and read the posts because I'm so happy about all of the attention they've put into it.

Naachan (Okada Nana) is the center :inlove: The theme of the outfit this time is a coordination of the basic uniform and everyone's individual character :chuffed: Naachan has a long shirt, simple to go out, and it's also styled with earrings, ear cuffs and a choker. #NaachanCenter

Onishi Momoka-chan's black mask was a hot topic  At first, it was a rugged black leather mask :fear: I thought it would be hard to use mesh material, so I think it will be nice to use it next time for a shooting :wtf: She loves wearing the mask a lot and has been wearing it for a long time now, so I wonder if I can make different versions? ;) #AKB48

    https://twitter.com/shinobukayano/status/1416340067346391040

Odaeri (Oda Erina):inlove: As you can see, she is a tall and beautiful woman, so I wanted to make the best use out of this charming young person. Because of that, she's wearing a b-girl style hunting cap facing back  She is good at dancing, of course, but she also has a nice singing voice! ;) Pay attention! #NemoHamoRumor #AKB48
    odaeri.jpg
    https://twitter.com/shinobukayano/status/1416345783419359235

Yuirii (Murayama Yuiri) has really beautiful abs, so after all, her styling makes her stomach more visible than anyone else. And since she is the Goddess of AKB48's theater, her bustier is checkered  When I watched the rehearsals before the performance, I thought her tie would come in the way of her abs, so I moved it just beforehand [hehe][hehe] #AKB48 #Yuirii #NemoHamoRumor
    yuirii 1.jpg yuirii 2.jpg
    https://twitter.com/shinobukayano/status/1416351822067888128

I wanted to make Oguri / Yuiyui a bit more girlish, so her uniform with the Alice band is reminiscent of Blair from Gossip Girl. :wtf: However, Yuiyui also dances quite a bit, so I matched it with a sporty zip vest so that it wouldn't be too sweet
    yuiyui.jpg
    https://twitter.com/shinobukayano/status/1416366277883400200

Yokoyui (Yokoyama Yui) is amazing at dancing, so I wanted to have a simple style that gives off the impression something is missing. Headbands that might look dull (no such thing) look good on Yokoyui, and it's simple besides that. I asked her to put some colour on the inside of her hair if possible [hehe] #NemoHamoRumor
    yokochan.jpg
    https://twitter.com/shinobukayano/status/1416372479472279553

I wanted to give Hiichan (Honda Hitomi) a little lady-like styling because she's both cute and cool :cute: I put glitter buttons on the small vest and it has the same stripe pattern as the jacket, and also a glitter motif with her delicate silver necklace. The ponytail adds to the look  #NemoHamoRumor #AKB48 #HondaHitomi

    https://twitter.com/shinobukayano/status/1416379259279400960

As the general manager, Onchan (Mukaichi Mion) was given a captain look with her ponytail tied up by a bandana ribbon :awesome: Her crop top white lined vest fits her small body shape and it is coordinated with the image of an AKB48 uniform, making her the embodiment of AKB's image  #NemoHamoRumor #AKB48
    mion.jpg
    https://twitter.com/shinobukayano/status/1416381415814426626

Tomu (Muto Tomu) gives off the coolest image within the group and I wanted to make her look like a scary paisen* [hehe] That's why Tomu-san is wearing large hoop earrings and a double vest with no tie!! That's the styling :fear: I wanted to use mesh while preparing this... o_O Makeup-staff was next to us and dashed to prepare her [hehe]
    tomu 1.jpg tomu 2.jpg
    https://twitter.com/shinobukayano/status/1416387370065088516
*paisen is a funny way to say 'senpai' (senior)

Yuichan (Yokoyama Yui) looks good in a classical style, so I wanted to style it somewhat British. Therefore, I chose a Gun Club checkered vest, a thin chain and a beret  However, with bangs it would be too warm, so I chose leather for the material over her forehead  #NemoHamoRumor #AKB48
    yuihan.jpg
    https://twitter.com/shinobukayano/status/1416390274616414214

Satone (Kubo Satone) is one of the active high school students, so her shirt comes out from below the vest, which has two lines of navy blue, just like a school girl. Also her tie is tied properly compared to the other kids  The most serious style [hehe] #NemoHamoRumor #AKB48 #KuboSatone
    satone.jpg
    https://twitter.com/shinobukayano/status/1416395120316874753

Megu's (Taniguchi Megu) style is really well balanced, so basically anything would look good on her. But this time, I went with the image of an older sister :fear: I styled her so that the shirt can be seen a little above the bustier, which has black glitter on it  Ah... I'm sorry I only have this one photo [hehe] #NemoHamoRumor #AKB48
    megu.jpg
    https://twitter.com/shinobukayano/status/1416398370822836226

As you all know, Zukkii (Yamauchi Mizuki) is good at dancing, so while I was watching Furi V, I thought their showcase was impressive o_O I mainly styled the bustier with flashy lines so it would stand out. Actually, you can't see, but there are some cute suspenders too :cute: #NemoHamoRumor #AKB48
    zukki 1.jpg zukki 2.jpg
    https://twitter.com/shinobukayano/status/1416404441721282565

Rin-chan (Okabe Rin) has the most gal-like appearance, so I went for a sukeban* styling (is that an old way of saying it? :() The styling is unique to Rin-chan, who has a cute face and voice, and who's known for fishing and reeling her fans in, therefore the chain on her belt  #NemoHamoRumor #AKB48
    berin.jpg
    https://twitter.com/shinobukayano/status/1416409261286952962
*sukeban means like delinquent girl or girl boss at a group of delinquents

Erii (Chiba Erii) is also an active high school students and likes making finger hearts  I gave her a styling with suspenders attached to her short hoodie that looks best on top of the collar [hehe] Actually, it looks cute even without the jacket  I almost cried when I saw Erii dancing so hard (what kind of emotions [hehe]) #NemoHamoRumor
    erii 1.jpg erii 2.jpg
    https://twitter.com/shinobukayano/status/1416413747434778626

Rei-chan (Nishikawa Rei) is also an active high school student, so in order to give her a smart image, I tried to make her look like a girl going to school with a strong sense of youth  (this nuance may not be transmitted [hehe]) But if you look closely, her strong point is a belt with chains that look good while dancing  #NemoHamoRumor #AKB48
    nishikawa.jpg
    https://twitter.com/shinobukayano/status/1416416197155774466

In order to take advantage of Naru-chan's (Kuranoo Narumi) boyish vibe, I gave her a skater girl styling ;) A short knit top with lines on the top and bottom give off a sporty image, and she's the only person wearing a bucket hat (my personal favourite), so it should be easy to find Naru-chan even amongst the agile movements ;) And her braids are cute #NemoHamoRumor
    kuranoo.jpg
    https://twitter.com/shinobukayano/status/1416420512712986625

The final tricky natural is Shitao Miu-chan :mail: She has great style and great performance skills! Moreover, because her face is small, I dared to give her a high neck styling with glitter buttons  For some reason, Shitao-chan couldn't take solo pictures... :cold: But forgive me please, the two-shot with Naru-chan is cute :cold:

I'm actually inclined to interpret the lyrics the other way — not a song sung 'from AKB members' perspective', but a song sung to AKB48 from the perspective of fans (or even Yasusu himself? lol) — you' look so different, 'you' were once the girl who ties your hair in a ponytail with a scrunchie ('ponytail ni shushu', nice throwback lol) but you're called a woman who suits rouge now; I heard rumours but can I trust you if we look at each other (dancing) all night long? When 'I' am in love, everything unfavourable about you is a rumour. (As explained by someone earlier in the thread, 'ne mo ha mo nai' [without roots and leaves] means that certains news is 'groundless', so 'ne mo ha mo rumour' would mean... even though there are grounds to believe the news, said 'grounds' are still rumour. So is this news true or fake? Well, 'both dreams and reality have become borderless' anyway, so let's just 'keep dancing all night long' instead of asking difficult questions :awesome:)

Obviously my interpretation is a lot more trashy :awesome: and it's still subject to change after the full lyrics are out, but I do think the use of 'kimi' is a telltale sign that it's a song to (not by) a girl/woman because AkiP's love songs for 48/46G (I'm not as familiar with his work for other artists) are usually quite gender normative and heteronormative :awesome: If the love song written from male perspective, it's usually 'boku' or 'ore' for 'I' and 'kimi' for a 'you' who is female. If it's written from female perspective, it's usually 'watashi' for 'I' and 'anata' for a 'you' who is male. Japanese sentences often have no subject which sometimes makes it difficult to understand which lines are describing 'you' or 'me' in lyrics, but such patterns of gender normativity and pronoun attribution have helped me decode quite a lot of 48/46G songs satisfactorily, so...

    - Even within 48/46G, pronouns seem to be less gender-indicative in songs that do not focus in romantic love. I believe AkiP still wants to convey a certain 'feeling' or image when he chooses a pronoun for these songs, but that image isn't necessarily relevant to gender.

    - All of you should already know that not all 48/46G love songs portray heterosexual romance :awesome: But it is interesting to observe the change (or lack thereof) in pronouns in these songs. For example Kinjirareta Futari (AKB48, 2006), the lyrics of which are explicitly about the love between two females, uses 'watashi' for 'I' and 'anata' for 'you', i.e. still the typical, expected language used by females.

    - Now what is interesting are the songs that use 'boku' and 'kimi' in the lyrics (which, accordingly to my observation of AkiP's writing habit, would indicate that they are about heterosexual romance) but feature yuri elements in the MV/choreography. Examples that come to mind include Kataomoi Finally (SKE48, 2021) and Guuzen no Kotae (Sakurazaka46, 2021).
Did AkiP write the lyrics with an intention to bend gender normativity (i.e. have a female protagonist use more masculine-sounding language)? Or did AkiP actually write the lyrics with heterosexual romance in mind but the MV director and/or choreographer just come up with an idea 'hey why not make this a yuri song!' (and AkiP as the chief producer still give this the final nod and let the MV/dance be what it is)? I honestly have no idea lol Apart from the pronouns, there aren't really other clues in the lyrics that tell us whether 'you' and 'I' are male or female.

    - All of the above is just me pointing out observable patterns in language usage, NOT an analysis of AkiP's personal views on gender norms and heteronormativity. I could think of multiple reasons why there are such patterns in AkiP's lyrics for 48/46G, but I'm not interested in analysing which is more probable than which.

During the first performance, there is indeed '本格的ロックダンスに注目! (Focus on the authentic lock dance!)' in the top-right hand corner.
