I was thinking about applying for this, possibly a stupid question but in the application screen there's a space for a message, what are you supposed to write there?

 

The members will sign the booklets on a live stream. You can watch them sign yours and everyone else's copies. When they get to your name, they will read your message and respond to it.

When AKB did this for Ne mo Ha mo Rumor signatures, I got Honda Hitomi's signature and asked "what's your favourite sister group song?." She then read out my name, read the message, answered the question, and then showed the signature into the camera (it was later sent to me).

 

As @bonjourmarlene says, the member will read out your message as she signs and you can say anything that's appropriate. If you're stuck for something you could simply say where you come from. I did that for last weekend's PB signing by ex-AKB member Owada Nana, I just said that I was a fan of hers from England and I got a surprised and funny reaction from her!

 

Thank you both, presumably the message would need to be written in Japanese?

 

I can't see anything in the rules that says that the message has to be in Japanese but if you type in English there's no guarantee that the member will be able to understand it, it all depends on her individual ability. To be on the safe side I'd advise using Japanese but you might find as an overseas fan that whoever you apply for has at least some basic understanding of English and will try to use it to reply to your message even if you type in Japanese - certainly that's been my experience a couple of times!
