Announced at today's event, AKB48 will release their 10th album on 2024/12/25. This will be a cover album with songs from the Showa, Heisei and Reiwa eras.

Applications can be made through the same link as for the 2-shots and like with regular online talks the WithLIVE app will be used. Each ticket allows some talk time as well as the photo and also an entry into a lottery for signings.

(Note that the first round of the application lottery for the 2-shot and 1-shot events closes at noon JST tomorrow (10/7) but there'll be another four rounds after that.)

So, compared to Koi Tsunjatta senbatsu:

If this release was a single instead, probably things would happen veeery differently. We would of course already have some 19ki girlies in senbatsu and some of the OUT girls wouldn't be removed. But I guess this make sense since this is an album and it has a time machine concept and AKB albums releases unfortunately don't get so much media coverage I'm hoping the A-side is still good and that we have at least 2 other brand new songs other than the lead track

 

I hope AKB48 would cover Odoru Pompokolin by BB Queens. Best known as the ending theme of Chibi Maruko Chan, & considered as one of the best both idol & anime songs of the Heisei era

 

They keep referring to it as AKB48's 1st cover album, so I really doubt we will be getting any original songs. That's not really how a cover album works. Best we'll get is a Disc 2 containing their recent singles.Tbh I'm kinda disappointed by this, we haven't had an album in... six years? Seven? The album only tracks are some of the best, I was looking forward to more.

That being said, YES! A full length album!! FINALLY. And coming out on Christmas no less, the perfect gift to buy for myself.

Over all as a showa/heisei idol fan I'm excited, but as an AKB48 fan I kind of wish this comeback album would be more moving forward than looking back. Also, I'm very interested to find out reiwa songs will they be covering, hmm...

EDIT: Just noticed Saho made sebatsu! Finally girl is getting her flowers! :')

 

Despite the circumstances of the album being lackluster content-wise, I'm quite satisfied with the lineup.

Hypothetically speaking they could've just include pushed girls from the newer gens like Saechan and Itomomo and call it a day, but they decided to give the spotlights to older gens and I fully appreciate this move. Kururun is the least surprising to me since she's still considered young and all, thus her senbatsu inclusion is only a matter of time, but Saho and Orin's inclusion shocked me! Is this an album senbatsu where it'll be less promoted compared to singles? Yes. Will these three girls be removed from the senbatsu on the next single? Most likely. Nevertheless, I have decided that I will cherish this moment in the spotlight for them.

The only thing that bugs me is management's insistence to keep the lineup 16-nin. I thought with the last single being 18-nin it'll be a step forward but I guess that's not the case :/

 

I was afraid that Yuiri's seifuku meant Sakura no Hanabiratachi 2024. but the uniform is different.

 

Covering songs which means this album has kinda high production cost because of buying license? A unique concept indeed, but better they hinder from including song they already covered (Valentine Kiss). I also wonder what they'll cover from Heisei/Reiwa era. Will they sing any Sakamichi song?

 

Maybe most of of you disagree but since Reiwa era began 5 years ago, no idol groups with massive popularity during these times

But I can suggest songs from Reiwa era that aren't idol songs but would be fit to be covered by AKB48 on this album:

1. Yoasobi - Idol
2. Honeyworks - Kawaikute Gomen
3. Attarashi Gakko - Otona Blue (Attarashi Gakko isn't an idol group, not all Japanese girl groups are idol groups)

 

akb are part of universal, so if the songs are part of umg's catalog (or public domain), they don't have to worry about such things.
