It depends. My definition of a push is when they pick someone that isn't as popular as they wanted and try to change it until you like her. In Ikumin's case it was definitely a push. But since the beginning Nagi was very popular.

One should question is why wasn't she or, I don't know, Naru chosen as Team 8's center during those years. Ikumin was still selected as center of Ama Nojaku Batta when Yuiyui's was already popular and it was obvious that Ikumin wasn't going get there. Then they just simply dropped Ikumin like shit, like nothing happened before. How sweet.

There was a time when she was selected for BwT's senbatsu (even though she was relegated to the coupling song's MV) and even centered a song with Okada (Ima, happy). Nagi, Ikumin and Yamada were kennined to B, K and A respectively. But after that she was completely forgotten. Sure, a few B-sides in the middle of a sea of girls, but for four years she wasn't selected again. I understand that back then AKB had a lot more popular members and it wasn't as easy to push someone new, but for fuck's sake, Team 8 was treated like garbage. She's one of those idols with terrible timing and luck. I will always remind people that for more than two years Nagi was never called to be on AKBINGO! During that time lots of eitos from across the country were there: Kurena, Hama, Naru, etc. If only she was like Minagawa when shaking hands...
Nowadays they push girls for less.

It's kinda like Maeda. She's not the only one in the "group" but there's too much of her compared to most of them. It wouldn't hurt to give a thing or two to somebody else.

Not even @qpet will deny that it's mostly because she was transferred to Ozaki's agency. Let me ask you this question: if she was selected because of her dancing skills why wasn't she in NO WAY MAN?

We have to be careful with AKS/DH's labels. Most people became to know Yoko's dancing thanks to that AKBINGO! dancing contest. Her robot moves grabbed people's attention. But, to be honest, I feel like it has become her one gimmick. "Yoko, add something special to Hachinosu Dance": robot moves. "Yoko, do something interesting in your Rumor solo": robot moves. Come on, do something different for once, like a spin or something. And what about the other types of dancing? Is she good at dancing more idolish songs? Team 8 has other good dancers. Is Naru worse?

It's similar for Odaeri. She won the AKBINGO! singing contest and from then on she was known as one of the best AKB singers. But she has that showa style of singing. When she went to Korea that bitch even told her her singing was outdated (after all, she's no Sakura). The way she sang back then is the same she does now and there were a few live performances that were... a disaster. She was nowhere near of winning any of AKB's singing contests. Can she sing like that former SKE girl with huge ears? And yet, they still tell us how Odaeri is such a great singer.

Don't get me wrong, Yoko is definitely one of AKB's best dancers and Odaeri one of the best singers. But Team 8 has other good dancers and singers that never got labelled the same way because our management is just like that.

If how Shitao was treated right when she came back from Korea is any indication.

She rose in popularity in Korea and brought back some fans == > definetly
She has now a much better position, in senbatsu line up, has tons of outside job (I dare to say she has more shootings now than in her kpop days), a blessing, considering than in IZ*ONE she wasn't front row material. (because one of the least popular).
But to make her a center, right after her return to Japan, IMO that's a big gap the management wouldn't cross, and the HS numbers back them up.
Still I wonder if her results would have been as high if they were real handshake events instead of online talks.
After all, AKB48's main target is still wota, then eventually the general public. Kpop fans may come after, they aren't that high in their priorities. Most likely they are considered a temporary boost.
Will they stay in the fandom in the long run ? After Hii graduates for whatever destiny ?

 

Gosh you're unlocking some memories here lool. Those early years of Team 8 were kind of wild in some ways. A lot of mismanagement really and honestly they were so confusing for a lot of fans at the time since they were like an external group rather than a real part of AKB at the time. And really idk about you, but I wasnt even sure Team 8 would last. Team 4 went through a disbandment and revival and that just kind of fucked with the team a lot until Mii-chan took over the reigns.

As for Yoko-chan not being in NWM, that single was for the produce48 gals mostly. I just think there wasn't space for Yoko-chan and wasn't she going through a scandal at that time too?? Or am I thinking of another Team 8 gal? Idk but I know yoko-chan was not favored by management back then at all. To me though, Yoko-chan is a hidden star in AKB48. Especially right now. Her appearance is very noticeable (that style is somewhat trendy within girls in Japan who like to explore a more "outsider" look while retaining the cute factor) and she stands out a lot during NemoHamo Rumour. She could attract a lot of attention given the right push. Idk about her personality since she's an idol and all idols are crafted in a certain way, but I'm sure she would be great for varieties. I know AKB doesn't care about fashion and makeup anymore, but at one point they dominated the trends with Tomochin and Mariko-sama. Everyone wanted to look like Tomochin back then lol. I could totally see Yoko-chan's hair and makeup trending.

Funny you mention the singing girl from Team 8 because that's exactly all I know about her haha. Her smile and the fact she's like the "best" singer in Team 8. She's definitely better than a lot of the girls, but she's not really THAT good. Just good for an idol.

Yea, we'll definitely have to wait and see for sure. AKB's management has weird priorities sometimes. They're really stuck with the handshake formula and just won't bother really venturing out and really it's a J-pop issue in general. They also just like never do collabs or allow the girls to hang out with other idols and be friends idk the japanese idol system is outdated in some ways and works in other ways. If they actually tried to produce content for outside of Japan and if Oricon actually counted outside sales maybe things would be different.

 

There's one huge difference between Shitao and Hii tho: Hii was a K-Pop idol for two and a half years.

But you're right about the difference between handshakes and online meetings, I've been saying that too. Shitao used to close every slot in Fukuoka but not so much everywhere else. Yet, Hii sells a lot more, but that's because she was a k-popper. How much of her sales come from Korea, Southeast Asia, the Americas and Europe? Only DH knows (and herself). But you know how AKB fans are: as soon as they know someone's getting a massive push they will follow it because they want to win or they simply won't bother looking for themselves.

Honestly, at the beginning I thought it was also a short-term project. After all, they had others like BaitoAKB. But I had my eyes on Nagi since day one, although I didn't give much fucks to the team. Until I started to involve and, before I knew it, I was looking for Nagi as much as I was for Mayuyu. I gave Team 8 a try and bloody hell what have I done? In just two or three performances I realized that I was losing/missing the best thing that ever happened in the idol world. They've been my girls since then.

Actually, Yoko has been favoured many times. As @nvmea said, this girl had many second chances before.

The thing about Yoko is that... How should I say it?... Let me give you a few examples. You know when AKB's YouTube or Twitter uploads individual videos for all members for whatever reason? Yoko's usually had lots of views. People even joked that fans mistook her for the other Yokoyama Yui. Then she was always praised for her dancing, she had that theatre push, then she was NWM's center on MUSIC STATION. Recently they gave her a photobook right after coming back from her scandal hiatus; you could see the other girls thinking "Really?". BUT!!!! Handshake sales? Shit. Sousenkyo ranking? Nada. Sooooo... What does that tell you?

Lately she's been everywhere: gravure, TV shows, AKB's senbatsu. All of a sudden, just like that. And they announced that she moved to Ozaki's agency. I usually compare it to Megu. Remember when Megu debuted? One of the secret weapons alongside Miyabi? That Majisuka push? Her Sousenkyo ranking always improving? And yet they never thought she was good enough to be selected. But now, after years in the shadows, right after she signed with an agency she's finally good enough to be selected. Yeah, my tiny balls. For years no AKB was transferred to another agency but they're doing it again and agencies are dictating things again. Even Onishi returned to the senbatsu. Naru is probably the only senbatsu eito that doesn't belong to another agency nor is part of the Korean group.

She can wrestle too. You should know more about her, she's Hii's friend!

But they hang out with other idols, actresses, whatever. And even post it on their SNS. They had many collaborations before. It's K-Pop that doesn't allow them to even mention anything or anyone else.

 

That agency stuff really does have a huge impact huh lol. You're definitely way more knowledgeable in the Team 8 front so it's interesting learning more about Yoko-chan because as an outsider I just see the bare minimum tbh. Naru's kind of amazing in that sense though if she doesn't belong to any particularly good agency or any agency minus whatever AKB's management is.

Those cookies better be amazing sis lol. I got time lately and with AKB finally returning to the idol world after so long it's nice having content from them. I saw the entire Tokyo idol performance from Team 8 with Hii-chan, Naru, Nagisa, and the rest of the team that was there and it was a fantastic 20 or so minutes. They looked so lively on stage. They performed some interesting songs too tbh I just wasn't expecting since I would think management would want them to promote newer songs.

ok, I genuinely feel bad for this dude, but I don't remember him at all LOL. My memory is literal shit and maybe if I were to rewatch some old AKBINGO memories will be unlocked, but as of right now, he's truly drawing a blank this FISHBOY. But he cute tho lol.

 

I should remind you, though, that this is just a personal view. Some things are pure facts but other people can interpret certain events differently.

In certain events their setlist is more AKBesque because those have more neutral fans and the management believes that's the only way for them to appreciate it. What was funny, though, was that Team 8 performed Rumor but AKB didn't. Team 8 had (a lot) more members who could perform that song.
