Nogizaka46 members Umezawa Minami, Saito Asuka and Yamashita Mizuki will be the cover girls of Japanese magazine AERA (No. 42), the magazine will be released on 19 September 2020.

 

Asuka hosts this week’s All Night Nippon, joined by Ume and Mizuki in the second half.

-Asuka starts laughing when she hears ANN’s theme song Bittersweet Samba at 7:21. She's familiar with ANN, including current weekly hosts (Nogizaka46, Sanshiro, Audrey, Shimofuri) and programs from decades ago (Takeshi, Sanma, Tamori, Cream Stew). It made her aspire to be on the radio. She says radio is part of her everyday life; she’ll casually turn it on while at work or when she can’t sleep.
-In her introduction, Asuka says she originally hadn’t thought about becoming an idol, but her mother and people around her recommended she audition for Nogi.
-This week’s topic for listener mail submissions was “weird school clubs,” including: Greetings Club (lining up and greeting the students arriving at school each morning), Oden Research Club (literally just eating oden. Asuka: “That’s so nice. Is that what being a college student is like?”), and Flash Mob Club (flash mobs to celebrate birthdays, love confessions, etc. Asuka: “That’s great, such a fun club… I might want to join – no, that’s a lie.”)
-A listener writes in at 31:19 to say Asuka sounds like a veteran radio host and not a first-timer, did she practice at home? Asuka: “You moron, I didn’t practice!”
-Asuka’s busy lately and has been having bad dreams. Rather than zombies or ghosts, she has nightmares of people appearing in her room. Recently, a manager got a bit angry with her. That night, Asuka dreamed she was sitting on the sofa at home and felt someone watching her from the window. If it was a ghost, it would’ve been fine, but it was the short, black-haired manager sitting outside on the veranda, grasping her knees and staring. The dream zoomed in on the creepy manager (Asuka laughs, “I’m calling her creepy”) until Asuka woke up sweating.

-Ume and Mizuki are usually awake at this time (1-3 AM). Asuka isn’t, so she’s sleepy.
-Eizouken was shot from the end of October to the end of January. The trio faced difficulties such as extreme cold and wearing wigs. Asuka says it was fun, but it was embarrassing to be unlike her usual self in front of the other two. Mizuki says it made Asuka more human, and Ume says it felt like Asuka opened her heart to them so it was easy to get along. The two had never really talked to Asuka before the shooting.
Mizuki: “These days, I can even get into the bath with Asuka-san.”
Ume: “That’s too much!”
Asuka: “That’s a no.”
Coming into Eizouken, Asuka says she felt like she could make fun of Mizuki and Mizuki would get it, but she didn’t know what the serious Ume would be like. For Nogi jobs in the past, no matter how early the shooting or how much she was on camera, Ume always did her makeup. So Asuka felt more relaxed seeing Ume without makeup during the 2-hour bus commute for Eizouken. Ume says she didn’t want to show her weak spots in the past, but recently she’s been able to have no makeup even during shoots, so she’s grateful to Asuka-senpai for helping her grow.
-During downtime on the set, Ume and Mizuki frequently reread the Eizouken manga. Ume says they wanted to capture the spirit of the original, as well as poses, silhouettes, etc. Ume still hunches her back because of her character.

-Asuka’s school attendance dropped off towards the end of elementary school, but before that, her club activities were playing musical instruments, tennis, and comedy club. Ume and Mizuki are surprised.
-Asuka hasn’t been to a school cultural festival and wants to know what it’s like. Ume’s class made gyoza pizza. Mizuki’s high school class made a roller coaster out of wooden boards, and performed a play of Snow White, with Mizuki as Snow White.
-Asuka (Tokyo) and Ume (Kanagawa) don’t revisit their hometown neighborhoods. Mizuki (Tokyo) has a friend who works at a bakery in her old neighborhood, so she visits sometimes.
-With the movie’s premiere, Ume is lonely that this time period is drawing to a close. Mizuki tells the others not to forget how close they are now. She’s afraid Asuka will go back to treating them like other people. Asuka jokingly says if that happens, she’ll watch the movie and remember.
