My BLACKPINK Experience

In a span of less than 4 weeks, I saw the first US concert on ITZY’s World Tour and the last US concert on BLACKPINK’s World Tour. Last night I took two granddaughters, ages 14 and 17 with me. They aren’t serious Blinks, but enjoy BLACKPINK on Spotify.

Did anyone say “getting there is half the fun”? They have never been in LA traffic. The concert was to start at 8. On Saturday both of the map apps I use showed a 45 minute trip, so I planned on leaving at 5:45 from my daughter’s house and getting to Banc of California Stadium around 6:30, when the gates were to open. That would give us plenty of time to park (I had prepaid for parking), get to the stadium, and get some food and merch before the concert. However, teenagers are teenagers and weren’t ready when I got to their house. Once we got in the car to leave, the map app showed a drive of over 1 hour, with arrival at 7:15. Once we got there, we were directed to the 4th level basement parking, where we discovered the elevator wasn’t working. By the time we got into the stadium, it was already 7:40. Since I hate being late, we skipped the food and merch (but did find the bathrooms) and made it to our seats at 7:50.

The person next to me was a serious BLINK who knew all the dance moves. She had come from Israel for the concert, and when I asked why she wasn’t going to a concert in Europe, she told me she had family in LA.

They were showing videos on the big screens, and each time one ended, there was loud applause, but it was in vain as the show didn’t start until 8:30, when they came out for How You Like That and Pretty Savage. That was followed by my two favorites, Don’t Know What to Do and Lovesick Girls.



[Note, I usually like to watch the performers and not the screens, which was easy to do at the ITZY concert as my seats were close to the stage, but here I had to keep switching back and forth from live to screen at this distance.]

While Cmila Cabello sang with Jisoo on Saturday, there were no guest performances on Sunday, although Olivia Rodrigo was in the audience (another granddaughter is a big fan and was getting updates on social media, which she shared with her sisters).

At the end of the announced show, there were fireworks over the stadium. While recent stories in the US press have mentioned that a lot of groups are no longer doing encores, there was a 3 song encore as shown in the setlist.

The aftermath



After walking back to the garage, the next “real fun” began. As we were at the bottom, we had to wait for the other floors to clear out, which took close to an hour, so I didn’t get home until 12:40.

While many reports from earlier in the tour mentioned lip syncing and various stage mishaps, I noticed none of that. In short, we had a great time.
