    Hinachima is this week’s guest:
    https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1o5411H7Jk
-After entering Nogi, Hina and Shinuchi have always had work during Christmas. But they're grateful, and it also means members are always able to do stuff together. Nogi usually holds a Christmas party.
-Hina has been watching lots of shows on Netflix, including: Alice in Borderland, It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, Suspicious Partner, Ghost in the Shell anime, and Money Heist (also recommended by Hoshino).
-Back in October, Hina and Shinuchi discovered that they both started doing Pilates at the same time because they both saw Blackpink doing Pilates on Netflix.
-Shinuchi congratulates Hina for starring in the drama Kyojo 2 next month, alongside Kimutaku (Kimura Takuya). Hina underwent strict training for 3 months to act like a real police officer; her back is straighter now.
-Hina grew up watching Kimutaku in the drama Hero. She was nervous to work with him, but says he was totally perfect and kind, so she likes him even more now. During breaks between shooting, he taught her to moonwalk. Shinuchi says that big stars are all incredible, they’ve all got star qualities like being kind to people.
-This week’s listener mail topic is what people love about Kimutaku in his various performances. Hina and Shinuchi join in on the fangirling, to the point where the radio director tells Shinuchi to “be careful” during the commercial break.
-Kimutaku addressed Hina as “Hina-chan” during shooting. Yesterday on a TV program, he addressed her as “Hina.” Hina says that he tends to drop honorifics for all his co-stars, but Shinuchi is still flabbergasted.
    -Wilderness World plays at 40:20.
-Hina says that she enjoys stage play rehearsals, but there are also harsh times when she needs to “overcome a wall” to improve. Shinuchi says she wanted to run away from rehearsals in the past, but the co-stars of her upcoming play have been so kind that she’s become motivated to rehearse. Many are theater veterans vs. Shinuchi who hasn’t been in a play for 3 years. They’ve helped discuss how to perform her parts line by line, and if Shinuchi forgets a line, they’ll say it’s their own fault for not performing their lines well enough to draw out the right response. Shinuchi says she can endure people getting angry at her, but people being so kind to her makes her cry.
-Hina says that in front of Kimutaku, she somehow found herself unable to lie, and was able to bring out her real self and be honest. Shinuchi suggests it’s because Kimutaku throws himself seriously into his work, so you feel like you have to match his level.
-On the recurring “things adolescent boys do to attract girls” listener mail segment, Hina finds quite a few things cute, such as swinging from the classroom door frame, or saying tsundere things. The segment makes her miss student life. When asked when she’d go if she could relive her life, Hina says she would return to the end of elementary school to see what would happen if she hadn’t joined Nogi.
-When Christmas rolls around, Hina wants to hear B’z’s Itsuka no Merry Christmas.
-Shinuchi and Hina discuss how Nogi has been using acrylic safety partitions, even in the dressing rooms, which makes it harder to hear each other, plus everyone’s facing forward as if they’re in a classroom, which feels sad. Hina mentions how she was moved to tears by fans rattling their balloons because they weren’t able to cheer at the recent Under Live.
-Shinuchi and Hina play their #1 SMAP song, Lion Heart.

Kubo is the final guest of 2020:
    https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1DV411b7wf
-Kubo thinks she’s old enough to start giving otoshidama (New Year’s envelope money) to her younger relatives and asks Shinuchi what amount is proper. Shinuchi advises 5000 yen for middle school students and 10,000 yen for high school students. Due to coronavirus, she suggests using a bank transfer this year.
-How did they spend otoshidama money in the past? Kubo bought the Nogi album, Toumei na Iro. Shinuchi’s mom saved up all of hers to pay for either her college enrollment fee or her coming of age ceremony furisode, she can’t remember which.
-Kubo’s home in Miyagi prefecture gets buried in snow in winter. Kubo says although she’s from a snowy region, she’s not strong against cold and gets frostnip easily.
-Kubo's 2020 New Year's resolution was to ignore all events, so she didn’t do anything for Halloween or Christmas, and has no New Year’s plans either.
-Kubo’s wifi has been broken since September. Her cellphone is also breaking down: the screen is chipped, the mail and notifications sometimes don’t work, the storage has been full for 3 years, etc. She was told to buy a new phone half a year ago, but she hasn’t because… that’s bothersome.
-Kubo says she wants to continue this debauched lifestyle and eat cup noodles on New Year’s day. Shinuchi scolds Kubo (it’s actually humorous, ~25:00-26:00), saying she’s always telling Kubo to eat what she wants to eat, not because it’s cheap or a bargain or popular. But Kubo says she does want to eat the cup noodles, so they agree it’s actually fine. Kubo says that in her own life, she can’t make choices for herself properly. Shinuchi: “But you chose Nogizaka, right?” Kubo: “Uwaa, piercing words!”
-A massive chunk of the episode is Kubo and Shinuchi arguing about the best way to eat natto.
-Shinuchi says she doesn’t give clothes to kouhai because they’ll feel obligated to wear it. She doesn’t invite kouhai for meals since they’ll feel obligated to accept and she’ll feel pressured to entertain them.
-When Kubo was young, she asked Santa for a unicycle, but fickle Santa gave her a calendar instead. Actually, anything would’ve been fine, she just wanted a chance to unwrap an enormous box.
-Shinuchi says their idol work means they don’t get many invitations from hometown friends, right? But Kubo says she doesn’t have her hometown friends’ contacts. Shinuchi says her friends have two Line chat groups, one with her and one without her, since she usually can’t join them. But the saddest thing was when a photo album of past photos was created for her friend’s wedding, and it was glaringly obvious how many fewer photos of Shinuchi they had.
-Kubo and Shinuchi are glad to work during Christmas, otherwise they would be alone or it would feel awkward to join friends. Nogi apparently held some sort of Christmas party this year, with many different types of cake.
-Kubo demonstrates some monosyllabic Miyagi dialect at 1:30:50 (Ko = come here. Ku = want to eat this? Ke = eat this)
-Kubo and Shinuchi perform choreography when the radio plays Boku (41:00), R246 (1:03:05), Sekaijuu (1:49:35).
-Kubo plays a song from a beloved drama from her school days, Little Glee Monster’s Sukida.

    Seira says “Happy New Year!”

if the video does not show watch the video here
-Seira and Shinuchi laugh about the New Year’s Eve CDTV performance of I see, during which Seira fell on her butt. Seira says her boots were stiff, so she wasn’t used to crouching in them.
-For her private coming of age ceremony, Seira will wear a mustard-color furisode passed down from her mom (visible on Seira’s blog). She’s already done a photoshoot, but since she gets photographed a lot during work, she says the photoshoot was actually more of a request from her mom, who enthusiastically directed Seira on how to pose for the photos. Seira is worried coronavirus will postpone the ceremony until summer.
-Shinuchi was unsatisfied with her (pre-Nogi) coming of age ceremony appearance, and says the Nogi makeup artists are better at styling her.
-Seira requested a white furisode for her Nogi coming of age ceremony, but doesn’t know if management will approve the color yet. Seira wants a showy white, but says she’s usually given purple or light blue for work: cold colors that feel more adult, onee-san, gentle, etc. Shinuchi says she’s given those colors too.
-Seira started growing applemint in June, but it withered in October, after she tried to prop it up with chopsticks. She still keeps the dead plant by her TV. Sakura gave Seira a saffron bulb for her birthday, which sprouted after a month without needing water or soil, but lately it’s been drying out. Shinuchi mentions that Manatsu’s houseplants are growing very healthily.
-Seira says she often messes around when giving birthday presents. She gave Sakura a childish nightcap with bear ears for her birthday, and told Sakura to film herself wearing it after a shower, saying thank you. Sakura did so.
-Seira hopes Shinuchi will stay in Nogi and “break through walls.” Shinuchi says she’ll keep at it as long as she’s able, but there’s “various factors.” Shinuchi says she’s stayed so long because she feels at home in Nogi. She initially planned to quit once she got into senbatsu, but then she got in unexpectedly fast.
-Shinuchi asks Seira if she’s decided how long she’ll do idol work. Seira hasn’t thought about it, so Shinuchi tells her please stay, we want to see more of you.
-Seira received what she expects is her final otoshidama (New Year’s envelope money) this year, since she’s 20 and has a job. She gave all her otoshidama money to her mom in the past.
-Seira observes that although Matsumura tells members to call her “Sayuringo,” she hasn’t really heard anyone call her that. Shinuchi laughs and says that Matsumura has been telling people to call her Ringo since the 2nd gen joined, but only about two members do it.
-Seira plays a song from her Osaka days, Dialuck’s Seishun.

Momoko is this week’s guest, broadcasting remotely due to heightened coronavirus.

if the video does not show watch the video here
-When Momoko returned to her hometown in Kagoshima prefecture last January for her coming of age ceremony, it felt like things there hadn’t changed at all. Momoko is confident that compared to her hometown friends, whom she says were all “strange kids,” she’s now the most reliable, levelheaded, and prompt. Momoko considered herself a negative person after she entered Nogi, but when she thought about it, all the kids around her back home were negative.
-Conversely, all of Shinuchi’s hometown friends are positive people and think she’s become weird.
-During summer dance lessons, Shinuchi thinks the 20°C AC is too cold and turns it up to 24°C when no one’s looking. Momoko and Miona are sensitive to heat and always say it’s too hot. Asuka is sensitive to cold. Kaki is also sensitive to cold but endures it.
-Since Momoko couldn’t return to Kagoshima for New Year’s, she instead indulged herself by eating a big box of sea urchin for dinner while watching anime.
-Momoko’s anime recommendations: Jujutsu Kaisen, The Promised Neverland, My Hero Academia.
-In the subbing vs. dubbing debate, Shinuchi prefers subs, and Momoko doesn’t watch foreign stuff. Momoko usually doesn’t watch Japanese movies either, just anime.
-Momoko easily gets motion sick in vehicles. When riding the Nogi bus, she usually sits in the 2nd row window seat so she can feel the wind or look at the sky, although Tokyo is tough because buildings block the sky. She’s always carsick when she arrives at work in the morning, and the makeup artist always asks her why she doesn’t take motion sickness medicine.
-Momoko doesn’t get carsick when she drives herself. When asked if she has a driver’s license, she’s says that’s a secret.
-During the “things adolescent boys do to impress girls” listener mail segment, if a guy was deliberately acting tsundere, Momoko says she would take it seriously and feel hated, or else she would dislike that he was pretending to dislike her.
-Momoko plays a song popular with the girls during her school days, Momochi Hiroko’s and I…

    Kazumin is this week’s guest:

if the video does not show watch the video here
-Kaz talks about visiting a dermatologist because of pimples on her nose, and getting into a friendly conversation with the dermatology nurse. Despite it being their first meeting, they got along so well that they proposed visiting a theme park together, although now Kaz wouldn’t recognize her if they met again since the nurse was wearing a mask. Kaz mentions another encounter with a store employee who was happy to help Kaz pick out earphones, which made Kaz think they could’ve been friends if it wasn’t for coronavirus. Kaz says she’s probably had more experiences like this recently because she likes people and coronavirus has lowered her amount of human contact.
-Shinuchi says Kaz has lots of friends who are similarly cheerful and enjoy talking. When Shinuchi visits cafes together with Kaz’s friends, she thinks “birds of a feather flock together.” Shinuchi says that she herself requires time to open up to others, but Kaz says Shinuchi doesn’t come off that way.
-When Kaz is tired and doesn’t want to talk, she prefers the train over taxi, but then sometimes work requires her to take a taxi, at which point she may strike up a conversation with a super nice driver, which makes her want to ride a taxi again despite needing to pay more. She’ll discuss stuff like where are the popular spots for taxi drivers to park and rest.
-Shinuchi talks about how cool and helpful her Atami Murder Case stageplay co-stars are. They played a prank on her during one recent live performance, by substituting the photo of the murder victim (not visible to the audience) with a photo of Shinuchi.
-Kaz once bought a loft bed without measuring it, and it was so high that it nearly hit her bedroom ceiling. She had to slide in to sleep in it.
-Kaz hasn’t returned to her home prefecture Chiba since last January. Ever since joining Nogi, she used to visit her friend’s house every New Year’s and play Switch games with her friend’s kids.
-Kaz plays a song that students in her hometown used to always sing at karaoke, Ueto Aya’s Ai no Tame ni.

    Mizuki is this week's guest:

if the video does not show watch the video here
-Mizuki enjoys going to aquariums, even by herself, to watch jellyfish swim in darkened rooms.
-Mizuki’s school was in the middle of the mountains. There was a lone house on the mountaintop, and Mizuki says every week the school held an assembly to ask the students who stole a chicken from it (Shinuchi: “Every week?!”). Apparently it was a different chicken each time, although they may have just escaped on their own.
-Mizuki has graduated from her 2 months on the Hirunandesu! daytime variety show. She says that during commercial breaks, Audrey-san (the Hinatazaka MCs, Kasuga Toshiaki and Wakabayashi Masayasu) didn't say much, even when the rest of the hosts were lively. When the main Hirunandesu! MC Nanbara-san asked Audrey why they didn’t talk, they replied that they save it for their ANN show. Mizuki met Wakabayashi-san in the elevator today; Mizuki told him she listened to Audrey’s ANN show last week, Wakabayashi said thank you, and then they were silent as the elevator went down 11 floors. (Mizuki presents this all with an amused and admiring tone)
-There was a McDonald’s on the way to Mizuki’s school, so all the students stopped by it. She and her friends went so often that they recognized the employees and knew who was better at grilling burgers, who was better at preparing ice cream, and when the employees’ shifts were. Her favorite breakfast order was the Sausage Egg McMuffin.
-Mizuki was bad at math, but good at memorizing texts in English and history class, a skill which transfers over to memorizing lines for work now.
-Mizuki never failed a test in school, she refers to herself as an unexpectedly serious student.
-Mizuki plays a beloved song of her youth, back number’s Takane no Hanako-san.

    Kaki is this week's guest:

if the video does not show watch the video here
-In response to a listener letter, Shinuchi and Kaki discuss marriage proposals. Kaki doesn’t have many preferences since she hasn’t given it thought before. Shinuchi says the expected reaction to a proposal would be to gasp and express appreciation, but she’s not confident that she wouldn’t instead start laughing and blankly ask what’s going on.
-On the topic of what she’d like to do with her children if she had any, Kaki says that her athletic dad used to take her out to parks, and to rivers to catch fish with a net, so she’d like to give her own kids fun memories like that. Shinuchi says she used to go to Disneyland with her mom’s friends’ families, and one of those families’ children later became an AKB member.
-Kaki says she gets teased for only wearing brown, black, or white clothing; she tends to stick with safer fashion choices. She doesn’t like to try on clothes because she’s shy about talking to store employees, so she doesn’t buy clothes that look like they might not fit.
-Kaki watches videos on her phone while in the bath, but recently her phone fell in the water. It started to malfunction, so she went to buy a new phone by herself at the phone store. Kaki says she’s used to riding trains in Tokyo now, but she still tenses up when interacting with store employees. She says the person at the phone store felt like an “urban salesperson,” like they had to deal with a lot of customers like Kaki all day (I guess she means customers who are awkward or clueless about buying).
-Shinuchi uses an iPhone 10. Kaki’s new phone is an iPhone 11. They’re both unaccustomed to the lack of a home button, and say it’s inconvenient when masked.
-Shinuchi used to hide her phone in her pencil case so she could use it during classes. When she asks if Kaki used her phone during class, Kaki reluctantly admits she did, and Shinuchi says she won’t pry further since Kaki has a public image to uphold.
-Kaki has visited Disneyland with Yuna. Kaki says that becoming comfortable enough to go out and have fun with another person is a high hurdle for her to overcome.
-Shinuchi says that Matsumura often decides to go on trips suddenly the day before, such as to Universal Studios or the Izumo Grand Shrine, saying “Let’s meet at the train station tomorrow.” Ex-member Saito Yuuri also used to suddenly say things like “Next week is a three-day weekend, let’s go to Korea.”
-Kaki plays a song that her dad used to sing all around the house until it was annoying, Mr. Children’s Shirushi.

    Ranze is this week’s guest:

if the video does not show watch the video here
-Discussing their housing preferences, Ranze says she wants a place with a big closet so she can fit her fashion collection. Shinuchi wants a place close to the train station. When Shinuchi was a student, she had to walk a long way home from the station, so she was followed by a lot of strange people (see Koujichuu #217).
-Ranze explains that she has a Kansai-sounding intonation because she had a transfer student friend in elementary school who had a thick Kansai accent.
-When asked what she wants for her last meal, Ranze says natto or miso soup would be good, but it doesn’t feel luxurious. She says maybe tofu with ginger instead.
-Ranze wants to go Mexico during a festival like the Day of the Dead, citing the movie Coco.
-Ranze’s love of the color red began in elementary school when she collected mushroom-themed goods that were red with white spots.
-When asked what has made her happiest, Ranze says being born to her mama and papa. Shinuchi says receiving the Japan Record Award twice in a row is up there.
-Ranze’s impression of Shinuchi is that she can’t respond in the spur of the moment, she’s slow (nibui) and jumbled up.
-Shinuchi compounds this impression by reading the wrong letter, getting tongue-tied, and laughing too hard to finish reading letters throughout the episode. Ranze scolds her for messing up.
-Shinuchi says there aren’t many occasions to show thanks, so holidays like Valentine’s Day are opportunities for her to buy expensive sweets from Yurakucho and share them with staff.
-Shinuchi’s refrigerator is stuffed full because she received a bunch of food from her birthday and from her furusato nozei tax payment gifts, coinciding with her schedule being too busy for her to cook. Ranze doesn’t know how furusato nozei works, so Shinuchi encourages her to use it.
-Ranze says many foreigners have talked to her (Shinuchi: “Because of your face? Hahaha”); she gets asked a lot if she’s mixed-race due to her face. Once, she was shopping with Hori in Harajuku, and two foreign women asked them how to get to Meiji Jingu, so she and Hori accompanied them all the way there. The women wanted to be friends, but Ranze and Hori said they were in an idol group and couldn’t give out their contacts or take photos.
-Ranze took correspondence courses for high school, but she still heard about “Sock Touch” from her friends, which is a special glue you put on your leg in order to hold your socks in place. Apparently it’s used both by students who want to keep their socks looking proper, and by gyarus wearing loose socks. Ranze is surprised to learn that Nogi’s costume people supply Sock Touch, and some members use it during Lives.
-The first book Ranze borrowed from the library in elementary school was a book on Bob Marley, from a book series about great musicians. Ranze plays a song she’s listened to since she was a baby, Bob Marley’s One Love.
-Shinuchi wants to correct her Wikipedia page: Many people think she was an office lady who joined Nogi, but she actually joined Nogi from her college job search and then became an office lady one year in. Ranze hasn’t read her Wikipedia page.

    Hoshino is this week’s guest:

if the video does not show watch the video here
-Minami says she probably wouldn’t make chocolates for Valentine’s Day, since store-bought chocolates taste better.
-Minami’s Februaries have been very busy since entering Nogi, due to Birthday Lives. Manatsu somehow manages to make chocolates and cake, but Minami says she doesn’t have that kind of free time. Shinuchi jokes that the staff make sad faces when they don’t receive chocolate, since the staff used to receive chocolates from everyone in the past.
-Minami was in rehearsal all day today. She tends to wear hoodies during rehearsals.
-For Minami’s 23rd birthday (Feb 6), she ate 5 different cakes from different workplaces and family.
-Members get lots of flowers on their birthday. Shinuchi prepared vases at home, but she still received too many flowers and had to put some in the sink.
-Shinuchi’s lightstick colors are blue+purple, so she gets blue flowers, particularly blue roses. Blue flowers are more expensive, so she tells staff and fans it’s fine even if they’re not blue, but they continue to give them to her. Minami’s lightstick colors are white+white, but she got pink and light purple flowers.
-Minami seems dissatisfied that – for example, if she had a graduation concert – the entire place would be white, because she says white isn’t as visible. Shinuchi suggests that if everything is white, then Minami would stand out by wearing a non-white dress; Minami takes note.
-Minami enjoys the drama Itaewon Class, but she’ll only have energy to finish watching it after the Birthday Live.
-This week features the Valentine’s Day edition of the “things adolescent boys do to impress girls” listener mail segment.
-Minami says it’s too late to start wooing a girl the day before Valentine’s Day. The battle for Valentine’s chocolate should start from April, May or June of the previous year, when there are school events like the athletics festival and you can make plans to meet during summer vacation.
-To make your heart go kyun-kyun, Minami plays flumpool’s Kimi ni Todoke.
-Minami was in track and field club in school, but it was a bother, so she sometimes lied that she had stuff to take care of at home in order to skip it.
-Shinuchi says she recently talked to Manatsu on the phone for 2.5 hours. Minami occasionally phones Manatsu too. At 1:00:58, Shinuchi asks what Minami talks about with Manatsu on the phone, like, for example, about things they want (hoshii mono)? Minami mishears this as talking about dried sweet potatoes (hoshiimo) and is like, we’re not neighborhood grannies. Shinuchi explains, maybe they really want something for their next birthday. Minami says no way. At 1:16:25, a listener writes in to comment on the misunderstanding, and Minami cracks up. She had thought Shinuchi was just an old woman who liked dried sweet potatoes so much that she’d even want them for her birthday.
-Members have recently said that Minami and Shinuchi feel like a couple. The two have been talking non-stop recently.

Captain Manatsu is this week’s guest:

if the video does not show watch the video here
-Shinuchi notes that “Akimoto” is the near the start of the alphabet, and asks if Manatsu was nervous getting her name called first in school. Manatsu says yes, she wasn’t the conspicuous type. Shinuchi says, “Liar, weren’t you the student council president?” Manatsu says “Oh, right…” but claims she was lackadaisical back then.
-Manatsu cried heavily when she graduated from middle school to high school. But she actually remained at the same school with the same classmates, so she’s not sure why she was so sad. She supposes it was the camaraderie and seeing other people cry.
-Manatsu was exhausted after the Birthday Live and slept 18 hours without dreaming. She went to sleep at 1AM, woke at 3PM, ate some pasta, slept until 8PM, and is still sleepy.
-Manatsu has had a recurring nightmare lately, about multiplying cockroaches. She also has had a recurring nightmare since childhood, about her family being replaced by impostors.
-Many members suffer from pollen allergies every year. It’s terrible. During rehearsals, Manatsu and Kazumin stuff tissues in their noses under their masks.
-Hoshino often feels the need to sneeze, but the sneeze won’t come. Shinuchi wants to sneeze more cutely. Manatsu sneezes more quietly when people are around, and says if she sneezed more cutely, people would think she’s faking it.
-Shinuchi likes old-fashioned stuff from the Showa and early Heisei eras, like the bubble economy and dagashi shops.

They discuss the 9th Birthday Live:
-Shinuchi says she messed up during the chorus of Barrette.
-During Ookami ni Kuchibue wo, Shinuchi recognized each backup dancer from their dance style, despite the cute wolf costumes.
-Online Lives are tough because they need to match the camera positions closely.
-There was lots of rushing around backstage, like running into position for Seikaijuu no Rinjin yo, changing costumes and running upstairs for Yukkuri to Saku Hana, etc.
-Manatsu enjoyed the after-broadcast. She says it was good the 4th gen won, because everyone got excited that they won, and kouhai probably wouldn’t be as excited if senpai won. The 4th gen were all fired up to win, but became apologetic afterwards. Manatsu thought that was cute and told them it was fine.
-The 2nd gen rehearsed Psychokinesis no Kanousei, for if they won the competition. Hori practiced a free-style dance that came out perfect, so Shinuchi hopes they get to perform it someday.
-Manatsu recounts how she intended to say “Miona” instead of “Nogizaka” at the end of Dankeschön, but she messed up and had to ask the sound staff to play the end of the song again.
-There were several new outfits during the Live, so they weren’t used to dancing in some of the shoes, particularly high heels.

-Shinuchi and Manatsu relied so much on drinking Yakult 1000 to fall asleep during the busy pre-Live schedule that they now have trouble sleeping if they don’t drink it.
-Manatsu plays a song that she claims to sing very well in the bath, Tanpopo’s Ouji-sama to Yuki no Yoru.
