^Karen from Little Glee Monster also had a message. The programming was perfect. I enjoyed the snippets from past shows. It was a nice send off to include a letter from Aki-P read by Kubochan. Iirc, viewership was up to 75K at the end.

All nights come to an end:

if the video does not show watch the video here
-Lots of old radio staff and Kubo came to the studio for Shinuchi’s last show. The company president from her OL days gave her a gift. Shinuchi went on a huge shopping spree to buy thank-you gifts.
-At 19:35, Shinuchi receives a letter of congratulations from the radio staff, and she begins crying for the first of many times. The letter informs her that the script and cue sheet she received for this episode were fake. Instead, the episode will consist of staff presenting her messages she hasn't seen before.
-At 25:30, a message from ex-captain Reika plays. Reika was also asked to do last week’s show, but it was the night before her stage play Slapsticks began. Reika respects and admires Maichun’s dedication to work, which may be partly why they first became friendly. Reika approves of Kubo as the next host, and says Maichun has nothing to worry about after graduation, just savor each day. Shinuchi remembers how they first became close, when Reika said it was unfair that Shinuchi and Matsumura didn’t invite her to vacation in Korea, so the three all went together the following year.
-At 30:35, a letter from the governor of Saitama Prefecture congratulates Shinuchi and thanks her for promoting Saitama. Shinuchi’s final Nogi Youtube vlog was a visit to Mitsumine Shrine in Saitama.
-Shinuchi plays the song she played on her first ANN0 episode 6 years ago, Ellegarden’s Supernova.
-At 39:39, a message from Little Glee Monster’s Karen plays, thanking Mai-chan for talking about her on ANN and hoping they’ll stay in touch. Karen was classmates with Maaya, so the three were able to karaoke together before.
-Shinuchi plays Little Glee Monster’s Your Name.
-The radio staff play clips they found memorable from Shinuchi’s radio history.
    • Sub-writer Okamoto-kun's choice (44:59): Shinuchi started crying when she realized she can’t give salmon skin from her lunchbox to Matsumura after Matsumura graduates.
    • Assistant director Nakamura-kun (46:42): ANN0 jingle for "DJ Mai’s It’s My Story," which was apparently some kind of fictional love drama segment about the life of DJ Mai.
    • Former director Funasaki-chan (48:07): Shinuchi’s ANN0 live broadcast from the dining room table of Funasaki’s parents’ home, since Shinuchi had a Live in Saitama and couldn’t return to Tokyo.
    • Mixing engineer Wakabayashi-san (1:15:13): Shinuchi’s ANN0 live broadcast from Thailand, where she shot her first photobook.
    • Writer Ishikawa-san (1:18:22): The opening of Shinuchi’s first ANN0 episode, which embarrasses her. Ishikawa and Wakabayashi are the only staff who’ve been with Shinuchi through all 6 years.
    • Future director Kagawa-san (1:21:56): Shinuchi’s participation in a cute phrase campaign for Nippon Broadcasting.
-At 59:51, Kubo enters. She reads a letter from Aki-P. Although Shinuchi called herself a 2-oshi, unlucky 2nd gen, faced pain and regret, etc., she asserted who she is and is always forward-looking when she converses with Aki-P on Line. As an older member and in relation to kouhai, there may be places within Nogizaka46 where the sunlight shines and doesn’t shine. But the sun moves across the sky, so Aki-P believes someday sunlight will shine on you, too. There’s something about Shinuchi that puts people at ease, not like strong rays of sunlight, but like a warm spot of earth in the sun, which has helped shape Nogi’s mood, and which Aki-P hopes Shinuchi will continue to spread. Shinuchi says her communication with Aki-P began around her first photobook, and she’s happy he unexpectedly knew about her.
-Kubo asks questions about the job. How does Shinuchi talk so much during “free talk” sections? She takes small incidents and stretches them out. She reviews her schedule. Like Kubo, she usually doesn’t take photos in her personal life, but she’ll do it to record when stuff happens.
-Kubo’s biggest question is, when does Shinuchi take a bath? Shinuchi sets a 3 AM timer so her bath gets heated and she can bathe as soon as she gets home. If the next day’s departure is early, she’ll bathe before ANN. She scolds her manager for forgetting in the past that ANN was in her schedule. She says Kubo’s going to have some harsh scheduling, but she offers to speak up to manager-san if Kubo gets too busy.
-Kubo plays a song she dances to whenever Shinuchi sings it, Nogizaka46’s Shitto no Kenri.
-At 1:26:40, a message from holy mother Fukugawa plays. Maichun’s ANN0 began just before Fukugawa graduated. Their 3 years working together felt longer. They quickly became friendly because they shared similar thoughts and troubles as the two eldest members. Fukugawa was worried that, after becoming the eldest, Maichun would feel the need to become impeccable and swallow things she wanted to say, but in watching her and sharing meals with her, she’s seen Maichun grow beautiful and strong. She still has the white sneakers Maichun gave her (Koujichuu #43, unaired scene but available in Asuka Koujichuu). She wants to buy new sneakers and climb Mt. Fuji together. Shinuchi says she wants to climb Mt. Fuji, but Matsumura's avoided giving her an answer, so she’s glad to find someone to climb with.
-At 1:31:53, Shinuchi reads a letter of congratulation from Ida-san, her capable OL work senpai whom she admires.
-Shinuchi plays a song released in her early radio days, Nogizaka46’s Futougou.
-At 1:40:18, Shinuchi addresses the listeners. When she began ANN0, she had few fans and thought the work would be too much with her OL job. But the staff aimed to get her into senbatsu and found ways to bring out her good side. They offered her the choice to quit in her 3rd year because of her busy schedule, but radio had become the one place where she felt at home. Although she’s quick to joke around, she’s not as sunny as people may think and has dark parts in her heart, and that’s why she believes listeners can sympathize with her. She’s recently been reading letters from so many people whom she’s influenced; they say that listening to radio helped them be able to go to school or otherwise changed their lives. She didn’t have that much presence in Nogizaka46, but she did have a presence in radio. Though people sometimes made fun of her too much, it was done with love. She’s fought a lot with radio director Funasaki-chan in the past, but all for the sake of improving the program. She sometimes wonders, if she hadn’t had radio, she may have left Nogi after 2 or 3 years. When coronavirus hit, all idol work dried up, but she was able to continue talking freely in live broadcasts, so it was a precious time for her. In her 6 years of radio, she’s never wanted to quit. But a beginning means there’s an end, so she’ll work hard towards her next stage. She thanks the staff and listeners. If you hear her voice again somewhere, she hopes you’ll root for her. Shinuchi plays Anata Kara no Sotsugyou.
-A 62-year-old taxi driver writes in to say he’s listened to Shinuchi for 6 years, and discovered that his night-shift coworkers were all fans when he heard them discussing the ANN host change. He says thousands of taxi drivers across the country must be fans.
    -Next week’s host is Kubo.

    * * *
Thus also ends my regular ANN summaries. I hope everyone’s enjoyed them. Any future ones I do will be irregular and probably a lot shorter. Anyone’s free to continue posting about ANN though. Kubo looks like she’ll be a great host, and it’s a fun bit of synchronicity that in her last stage play, she starred as a girl walking through a very very long night.

I would like to say, thank you so very much for all the translation work you've done, it is a wonderful piece that I look forward to every week and it is greatly appreciated!

I miss Maichun but I think Kubo is perfect as her successor. :)

    Cheers!

Condensed highlights of Kubo’s first three episodes!

    Episode 1 (2022/02/16)
-Kubo’s mom calls in at the start of the show.
-Kubo says that in elementary school she wanted attention even more than she does now, in a bad way. She nominated herself to be class representative 12 times over 6 years, but she was unpopular and never elected.
-Kubo kept her head down in middle school. When she auditioned for Nogi, she only told 3 friends, including a kouhai who said she’s rooting for Kubo. But someone leaked to Kubo’s classmates that she auditioned, which caused Kubo to doubt that kouhai.
-Before Nogi, Kubo never aspired toward Tokyo life and told her parents she’d never leave Miyagi prefecture.
-Kubo wears tracksuits so she doesn’t feel comfortable in Tokyo’s high-fashion neighborhoods.
-Kubo’s family are fishermen on her dad’s side and farmers on her mom’s side.
-Kubo plays her favorite song, Tamaki Koji’s Searchlight.

    Episode 2 (2022/02/23)
-Kubo was told she spoke fast in the first episode so she’s paying attention to her talking speed.
-Kubo plays Actually. The song and dance feel new and Aruno-chan was cool and good at singing.
-Angerme’s Sasaki Rikako is Kubo's only peer with whom she can share her Rakuten Eagles fandom. Hazuki also likes baseball but she supports the Saitama Seibu Lions.

    Episode 3 (2022/03/02)
-Akimoto Yasushi guests to promote his new book about Sakamichi song lyrics. They don’t discuss the new single, lol.
-Aki-P last interacted with Kubo during auditions. He doesn’t usually meet Nogi members directly, though he’s shared meals with 1ki after they became older.
-Aki-P says Kubo was overwhelmingly the staff’s recommendation for new ANN host.
-Aki-P’s advice for candidates at Nogi auditions is don’t be self-aware of your own appeal. If you deliberately focus on your strength, judges will see the part you polished and think that’s what you’ve got. But if you’re an unpolished gemstone covered in dirt, judges will look for which of your facets can be presented to become interesting. Aki-P gives the example of a girl who just kept crying throughout auditions but got accepted anyway (probably a reference to Momoko).
    -Kubo plays Kachiaru Mono.
-For a new Nogi single, Aki-P receives ~1000 songs from songwriters and chooses which to use.
-When writing, Aki-P observes small life details to tell a story. For example, decades ago when he visited New York City, what he remembered was the windows around buildings under construction, or how they added powdered sugar to iced coffee, or how a chandelier flickered to let audiences know a Broadway show was about to start.
-Aki-P spends time on lyric ideas, but the actual writing of a song's lyrics takes ~2 hours. It’s motivated by deadlines, e.g. Hinatazaka is shooting an MV tomorrow. He may change lyrics after he sees members singing, etc.
-Aki-P sleeps 3-4 hours per night.

This. I was worried after listening to her first episode that she spoke too fast, like, can she keep that up? Good to know she's conscious of this. She was awfully genki those first shows. I wonder what the late night listeners think so far?

@JpmusicRocks Thanks for your work on the 5ki intros. You’re going over every sentence, which is more than I would’ve done :D. There are some nuances in Teresa’s section, I dunno if it was because of the Chinese script:
    • Kubo’s saying she doesn’t think of “Shiori” as a particularly Japanese name, but it sounds quite Japanese next to “Teresa” and “Aruno.”
    • Matsumura and Teresa were ronin, which means they failed college entrance exams and were waiting for the next year’s. Teresa says she had graduated high school at that point. Ronin usually study at home, go to cram schools, get temp jobs, etc.
    • Teresa says she “thinks [her mom] is probably supporting her now” 今、は多分お応援してくれると思います。Maybe she’s just sheepish, but her tone sounds to me like she might actually be uncertain.
    • This one’s more obscure… Kubo actually said she didn’t get a reaction segment (tegotae) on Love It. None of her responses (like what they did on Koujichuu #300 when Sakura cried) made the final cut of the broadcast, but the Love It hosts actually made it a running joke that Kubo never got to respond, so you might say Kubo is humorously deflecting if she actually performed well on the show. But “didn’t do well” is basically what Kubo’s suggesting, so “didn’t do well” is a fine translation.
    • Also, it's normal for all the 5ki intros to be prerecorded, they did the same thing with 4ki and it took a few months before 4ki started guesting in person on ANN.
Here’s last week’s episode. Nagi and Okamoto segment starts from 1:05:58

if the video does not show watch the video here
    Kubo anecdote (from 36:28)
When Nogi performs dances on a big stage, each stage area is assigned a number so members know exactly where to go. Main stage center is assigned #0. For the biggest music TV shows, the numbers max out at 7. But for the 10th Birthday Live, Nissan Stadium was so massive that the main stage alone was assigned over 30 numbered locations, the corridors along the stadium went up to #98, there were multiple big stages so there were multiple #0s, and clock-based directions were also assigned in relation to the circular stage in the center of the stadium (e.g. Kubo must run from main stage #10 to stand at the stadium’s 3 o’clock). Kubo was thrown off by the clock numbers and failed to memorize her positions for the first time in 5 years. Eventually she succeeded by using Rakuten Eagles baseball jersey numbers as a mnemonic device. For example, Kubo needs to stand at 3 o’clock to perform “Kimi ni Shikarereta” → Rakuten Eagles player #3 is Asamura Hideto → Asamura ni Shikarareta (“I was scolded by Asamura”)

This week’s episode. Teresa and Aruno segment starts from 53:19

    Kubo anecdote (from 35:47)
Kubo generally prefers going to karaoke alone so she doesn’t have to be considerate of others and match their energy. To celebrate after the 10th Birthday Live, however, she went to karaoke with Christie, Riria, and Hazuki. Hazuki doesn’t sing at karaoke and only dances to other's songs. Kubo felt concerned at Hazuki being left out and asked her to pick a song, and cheered along with the tambourine when Hazuki sang. Later on, Kubo flawlessly performed the rap in Creepy Nuts’ Nobishiro, which inspired Hazuki to sing some NiziU songs, but she kept stumbling over the rap sections and became discouraged. As the karaoke session came to an end, Kubo picked NiziU’s Make You Happy and offered to sing it together with Hazuki, whereupon Hazuki performed the rap section perfectly.

Do you happen to know what's with the part around 57:50? Did Kubo bring up being from Chiba for no reason? I thought that was confusing (and funny)

I guess she’s saying Aruno’s life was uprooted from Chiba, as an example of how the 5ki’s lives were set on a different path by their friends’ recommendations. Chiba is pretty close to Tokyo… but I don’t know what else it could mean. Kubo never expected to leave Miyagi prefecture, so she’s probably more sensitive about that stuff.
