Interesting new oricon system... AKB will be fine with the system. But if they release new single on same day with Yonezu Kenshi... Spoiler: kinda OOT but related Otherwise, JE will not be fine since its management really hates digital-release stuff lol
Oh yes, for voting single they probably can do it, but the question is probably going to be whether it is going to be profitable for them. Of course with Oricon counting digital download it can be an incentive for them to do it, but if you look at how they count the sales, 1 song sales has 0.4 modifier, thus I'm not sure the end result would actually be better for them. For the hardcore fans, they will probably buy the digital version on top of their normal physical purchase (since normally a single release has 6 songs, thus only around 1.5k yen for 6 votes, a bargain), but for the casual that only want to give very few votes (and there are a lot of this type of people), they might just buy the digital version only, thus potentially reducing the sales number and the actual money AKB make from SSK. I do think they should go for it and see what happens. It is really hard to predict this kind of thing until they try it. But anyway, this new way of counting it is mostly to make their ranking relevant again since a lot of people in Japan are moving to digital only and don't purchase CD anymore, making Oricon ranking irrelevant to measure popularity (and they make their ranking not to compare sales but popularity which people often times forget and think they should show pure sales number). Right now when I want to know which song is popular in Japan, I either check the Billboard top 100 or iTunes ranking (especially iTunes ranking) because the result is much more relevant than Oricon. I do know that people also want to know the pure sales number since it is always nice to know how many CDs they actually sold to people and we already have like that Billboard and iTunes ranking to see the popular song. But in the end Oricon is a business and they need their ranking to be relevant so I understand why they want to incorporate digital download/streaming to form their ranking. Probably the only thing that is still a question mark for me is whether they will change how they count physical sales again or becomes more thougher/lenient with it. Also hopefully they will not only show the combined ranking but also the individual CD, download, streaming number. Because I like more data
....Edgy46 is gonna obliterate this chart more. Their digital and streaming number is huge. We might see them reaching 1M first week sooner. I guess, Yasusu is gonna make another GP-pandering sing again for 48G after this rule is applied
I think everyone needs to read the formula more closely. 2.5 downloaded songs = 1 points. So 1 song downloaded from a single worth 0.4 points. I know that Keya is the best 48/46G in digital charts, but the problem is that you can only download the same song 1 time, thus the actual digital sales number is very small compared to disc sales. Popular song normally needs several months to even reach gold (100k sales). If I'm being generous and Keya next single sold 100k individual song (A side + coupling) digitally in their first week, it would add 40k points to their first week number. If we apply that to Ambivalent, their first week number would be 851,684 (811,684 + 40k). Of course there is also the playback number, but the modifier is 1/300 so the overall effect will be very minimal (10million playback/stream = 33k points). Keya will get the biggest boost in Oricon points, but I don't think it will be more than 50k point boost for the 1st week number.
I really doubt they'll include codes with the downloads. Just compare the prices and calculate how much money AKS/King Records will receive. The phjysical is always going to bring them more revenue. The new rules are basically to help those artists/groups who aren't idols and have a bigger streaming oriented fanbase. But hopefully this will push the rest of the 48G to put their stuff on Spotify (it's ridiculous that only NMB is there and NGT just has one mere single).
But AKB is already on Spotify??? I know it's in Japan and Thailand region, not sure where you are. And Spotify doesn't count as streaming point in Oricon chart. They only count selected service, and I don't think they are going to count oversea number anyway, much like physical sale right now.
Oh hey, a cultured discussion on Stage without any wall-of-text essay Agree with most point though. The modifier is too small to be impactful for idols whose main income is from physical sales. But curious to see will they try it or not. I don't use Spotify, so I don't know. But I can use Japan LINE Music if I want to. Anyone know if they put AKB songs there?

Only AKB I think. Looking at the SG's sales, I don't think any can outperform K46 at #10. Lol, wotas wallet is still strong enough.
Pretty sure it's only for things released with "AKB48" as the artist. Re: new oricon rules. It will surely only shorten the gap between big idols and everyone else. Maybe the yearly charts will be affected but not weekly. Even if they release the same week as Yonezu Kenshi, digital sales are much slower than physical, then add HS preorders.

I wonder if the difference betwen Nogi and AKB is because of big concerts? AKB only had the Jabaja concerts back in April and it was just one day (noon and evening), plus the SSK one in June. The rest has been in TDC (RH, Kouhaku and the rest) and the (non)ranking concerts. In the meantime, Nogi has done a summer tour in domes and stadiums and with a couple of days in each venue, so the difference in attendance to concerts must be huge.
