I thought this topic was necessary, after I saw all of the replies on how S48 members convinced people to become wota in the AKB48 and Real Life Relationships forum, and since I was the first to post about it there, I'd better take responsiblity and make this.

Basically, just post any experiences you've had with this, and any strategies you've got.

Also applies for any ***48 or even 46 group.

Re: Converting friends, family, etc, into liking AKB

    I'd better start off.

I haven't had many experiences, as my friends nor family would be interested at all.

One strategy I have now though, is showing them something they can laugh at, like a subbed ep of AKBingo.

    Something subtle yet enjoyable.

This needs a good strategy to achieve success, I better call Professor X to help me sort out the things AKB they will like thru mind reading. [hehe]

    *making a list*

*Scratch head, then throw the paper*

I'll post later my grand conversion plan this needs much thinking. :^^;:

Is there a topic about converting societies? Seriously, what photos to pick, which facts, songs (nearly all j-music fans here around are interested in heavier rock like v-kei, how to attract them?), girls?

Like I said in the other thread .. so far the only success I have is to show The Documentary of AKB: To Be Continued ... got some positive feedback from that. But a few people never even started to watch it because it's too long ... -_- ...

Heavy Rotation is a huge no no. People just go speechless afterward. :D

^ But Hebirote as PV or as stage/concert performance? It makes difference, I suppose.

Documentary is good, but you admit, that too long [hehe] Is there something shorter, that attracts? What about Beginner, Kazefu, Dareka (with story about relief)?

    Someone should, then :)

As for the notice, official channel has PVs subtitled (english, chinese and something else), captions are also available. I noticed it just few days ago, preparing links for other forum.

Yeah, gotta have something subbed, otherwise you'd get people going "I CANT EVEN UNDERSTAND THIS!"

    My friends at least..

It all depends on the audience.

As soon as I get back to school, I'm going to attempt to *wotanise?* My japanese class. At least they won't argue about the language barrier.

Since this thread is here, is there a way to undo the damage that the Heavy Rotation PV has done? cause after that, I've had no luck trying to convert =/
would their sub units be a better approach to all this?
The closest I've gotten was with Anata ga Ite Kureta Kara, the only thing with that is, slow songs arent good at getting someone into a fandom :/

^Well, tell me who you are trying to convert :)

You have to find something that fits their taste

yeah i think heavy rotation is definitely not something that should be showed to try and convert someone, nor everyday kachuusa.
for songs, something like iiwake maybe or flying get is catchy enough without having a pv that is a bit.. revealing :hehe: and also Give me five is pretty good (the 4min pv). although i havent tried these, i doubt my friends would really give jpop a chance.

but something from a show like akbingo/bimyo (that has hard subs, which seems difficult to find) is not bad in trying to win some people over. maybe something like this:

Re: Converting friends, family, etc, into AKB48

Thing is I don't think you'll have much luck "converting" anyone into being a fan unless they're already interested in j-pop to a certain extent or have some connection to Japan (like learning the language, playing a lot of video games, reading manga, those things...).

Of course in my case there's not much converting to be done and I got a few people here that I talk about AKB with. But if I was in another (western) country I think I'd probably prefer to keep it to myself. I'd be seriously weirded out if suddenly all of my friends started getting into their music, none of them being able to speak a single word of Japanese. I can't remember anyone of them showing interest in any other, more "common" genre of Japanese music so there's really no reason for them to go look up Japanese idols. If you're living in China or Korea it'll be a little bit different though, I guess.

As for AKBingo or Bimyo, I can't see them do the job to be honest. There's not much to be had off of those programs if you're already satisfied with what's on your TV. I can pretty much guarantee that your friends will simply be confused as to why you're showing them some "obscure subtitled Japanese comedy program". ;)

I'd say the best approach would be to first introduce them to some music that's more easily accessible and let them find their way to AKB themselves.

For some reason .. a few people I talked to about AKB .. think that AKB girls are all high school age .. like 15-18 .. and said AKB is too "loli" for them .. I guess it's due to their uniform image that caused this. =\

Re: Converting friends, family, etc, into AKB48

Hmm.... I think HRP did a point in this. We better establish a bridge first between J-pop and English pop. I didn't really care about J-pop at first all I know is that anime openings and endings is from that genre but due to lack of sources for this music I didn't pursue this until I stumble upon some Anime Music Video of the anime I follow. This things started to get clearer to me I was able to find more information regarding the songs and thru persistent researching of the songs I ended up in Hello Online! :^^;: But that's before I completed all the songs of Macross, Gundam, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach... there's still more. The point is we should start from mainstream knowledge about Japan like anime and manga the language and other deep knowledge for later. Idols still have a not so good image to those who doesn't dwell into that realm because of porn sites and gravure tend to get mix up with them, oh Rina. :fp:

This is getting longer. Let's us identify first what is a common knowledge about Japan and the interesting things we could provide them before even showing them about AKB.

^I want to be in that class..

Hmm, you do have a point guys, but my next step is converting my japanese class, half of them KNOW Akb, but they just aren't exposed to it.

I wouldn't bother trying to convert someone, if they had no connection to japanese music, or language.

I had quite a jump.. I went from K-Pop to AKB, and for about a year, that was the only japanese music I listened to (with the exception of some anime themes here and there)

Well, my friend likes groups like SNSD and T-ara, she likes cute music, but not music that's too cute I guess?

The only problem with these things are that a lot of intl jpop listeners don't even like AKB. That friend could just end up bandwagoning, or feel angry that they're doing so well compared to the others they've discovered first.
