I know SNH48 is no longer a topic of conversation these days but has anyone seen their latest video on Youtube? It's called Summer Pirates and it really made me wistful for the older days of AKB where they would put the girls on the beach and in exotic settings and tell a cute silly story while the girls sang a great up-tempo pop song. That group has come a long way since their early days. I'm very impressed. Anyone else feel the same?

I agree that it is very reminiscent of...well, what idols normally do. AKB tries to fit itself into so many different genres and make a statement about everything, so we don't get beach bikini nonsense anymore. Aki-P and the rest of the crew's artistic vision seems to have moved on from silly idol junk to things that are more elegant and impactful but unfortunately ultimately less satisfying to a lot of idol fans. It would be nice if for every NnM / Tsubasa wa iranai PV we got something like Ponyshuu or Lucky Seven, but the group seems to have moved on from such things in favor of stuff with more of a narrative. Which I'm not inherently opposed to, I do like a lot of the PVs that AKB has put out recently. But a break once in a while to indulge in some very basic idol stuff would be nice.

 

I agree with everything you say. So, I guess the beach videos are gone and will never return? If so, that's a shame. I thought they really were very very cute. Like a summer action movie. Apologies for bringing the topic up here. There's also a nice 6 and a half minute behind the scenes video, as well. Really well done.I didn't know there was still an SNH thread anymore.

 

SNH girls are really cute as usual and I adore "bikini nonsense", but when it got to the "summer. summer. summer. summer. summer. summer. summer. summer. summer. summer. summer-" part I closed the tab. Honestly, I can barely listen to their original songs and the most appealing thing to me about AKB songs is that I love listening to them lol. Can't be compared to Ponyshushu in any way.

(since it's a comparison to AKB summer singles I assume it's fine here)
