OMG YES! Rise Satopii She's a cutie and I like her ever since I saw her in theater stages in mid-2016. especially her voice and personnality are so adorable. It's great to see that she is getting a little push from management and she's being well-received by fans who consider her for possible future ace/center. I love it, and especially because I haven't been a fan of management's new gen pushes in the past 2 years, now finally someone I like is getting some love & popularity
That's the one, I guessed it might eventually appear on YT. Incidentally during the 2 or 3 days after the broadcast it was in the top 5 of most watched shows on BBC iPlayer.
It certainly wasn't the worst thing I've seen from the BBC (either their website or broadcast) on the subject of idols in Japan.
I agree, although I had a couple of small issues. The Rio "Brothers" was quite extreme, even by idol standards. It kind of made i seem that is what most of the fans are like, which really isn't the case. I mean, the fans do organize. But these guys may have been hamming it up for the camera. Also, they liked to focus their camera on the most awkward fans when they filmed handshakes... But the interviews with the fans and the idols were very good, even if they didn't paint these people in the best light. They were very honest about what their lives were like, and the motivations for doing what they do...both the fans and the girls themselves. I remember when this film premiered, and a lot of the reviews that I read seemed to be upset that the movie didn't portray the fans as creepy enough. But that's the thing, there are huge misconceptions, especially by people in the West, of what these fans are like. So sorry that they didn't fit that stupid little stereotype that so many are convinced is true. Instead the film showed the human side of both the fans and the girls, and you almost sympathize, with all of them.
I always hate how they associate fans with being like some 48 year old non-attractive men that can't get a date essentially lol. I mean, yes, obvs, they exist, but there's many female fans around, many young fans around, and so on. And you're right the rio brothers are pretty extreme imo, but at the same time, I was glad she had such loyal fans. Didn't AKB get a documentary thing from BBC once? They interviewed Aki-p right?

ah yes, now I remember this interview. Yea, this was meh as an interview, but also relatively expected.

From where is this Seijun Philosophy performance at the intro of the doc? Hahaha Still on this topic: it might be a generalization of wota/otaku behaviour, but it doesnt mean it doesn't exist. Found the doco very spot on sometimes. And very real. The interviews actually are great.

probably those reviews were based on the full movie that was shown at film festivals. apparently the BBC one is 30 mins shorter. so they edited it. i don't know if it's better or worse this way... i have many problems with this documentary, it seems like it shows the reality but in the same time it tries to plant a negative image in people's minds. mistranslations, one-sidedness and such... it's not about the idol culture. not to mention that the most of the viewers were already biased thanks to the ridiculous media that Japan receives based on the "weird Japan" phenomenon that the western media companies have created for simple westerners who like feeling that their pathetic sheep life is better than other's. my opinion: https://plus.google.com/113543462137380481184/posts/cP2zMSgYuBk if the video does not show watch the video here
