She was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, USA to an American father and a Japanese mother. She lived in America until age 11.
- She moved to Japan with her mother after graduating from elementary school. She passed the AKB48 audition shortly after. Her father and brother stayed in America.

She is fluent in English. When she first joined AKB48, she was better at English than Japanese, and struggled to talk to fans at handshake events.
- She did not know many kanji when she first joined. She wrote mostly in hiragana, and it sometimes took her 3 days to compose a blog post. Before the 4th Senbatsu Election she said her current goals were to improve her dance skills and finish learning 6th Grade Level kanji.
- Throughout 2012 she posted daily videos on her Google+ called "30 Seconds English Conversation" teaching English phrases. Her lessons were even featured on Nippon Television's morning information program "ZIP!".
- She served as a translator and interpreter on-stage for AKB48's Washington D.C. Concert in 2012.
- She traveled to London to conduct a solo English interview with One Direction for Music Japan in December 2013.
