I don't have specific questions (for now). Just post whatever you think is helpful. I suggested a new thread because it would be easier to find information without going through pages of photos and stories/comments. My idea was to post stuff like: "If you're looking for X, you should go to the store Y in Z. Here's a guide" or "If you go to X, be sure to see/eat/check Y" or "You can save some money if you do X" and followup questions.
We can make a new thread and I'll consider doing that. But I think it's difficult to post stuff like you mentioned above. For example, Tokyo and Osaka are completely different, you know. In Tokyo, you might be unable to find the same stores as in Osaka. So if you, or anyone else, have questions, please post here. And if this thread is filled up with lots of questions and answers, I would consider making a new thread.
Of course it would work like that but my original idea was that people post interesting stuff without being asked first. Because, I think, it's hard to ask about things if you don't even know they exist - And I guess Japan has a lot. But I actually have a question now. It's quite general. In/near Tokyo are there places one should NOT go (I'm sure there are)?
OK. I got you. If you really want a new thread like you mentioned above, you can create it yourself. It would be the fastest way. You mean places one should not go because they're dangerous? or because they're boring or not worth going?
OK, I think I'll do that - Let's see how it turns out. Since I have nothing to add to it, it'll be an empty start... Both actually. I know that Japan is quite safe but there must be places that one should avoid. "Boring"/"Not worth going" on the other hand might be open for discussion.
My opinion is unless you go to places where not so many people are there, you will be safe in Tokyo. But in my opinion, Kabuki-Chou, Shinjuku is the most dangerous place since there are lots of illegal shops and bars, illegal immigrants, and yakuza. Boring/not worth going places depend on your tastes. So I cannot say where is boring.
I've never had any problems with Kabukichou, but then again I'm a foreigner. Most of my students at work agree, they only really hassle Japanese men there anyway. Hell I stay in Kabukichou every time I go to Shinjuku, I go walking through there at night, early morning, etc and never a problem.
@Shin / Tara: Thanks for the info. I'll keep that in mind. If they don't care about foreigners I guess I'd be fine. But is there anything worth seeing there? Why do you go there so often?
In my case, I usually go to Tokyo for shopping. I just go to random places, walk around there, and enter shops at random. So basically, I don't have any plan when I go to Tokyo. But it's really exciting for me.
posting here from a block away from the AKB building, and going back there in 15 more min:s, and going to see other parts of japan, Tokyo, Kyoto...i just love everything about japan! also the young women are so gorgeous here!
Thanks for the answers! quilver, don't forget to post pictures! A question for those who could contribute: If I were to make a thread as mentioned above, would you be willing to participate? Because I have nothing to add to it myself and I wouldn't want to have an empty thread around...
posting again from Japan. There is so much to see and do here, even for just a few weeks. Now i am in Kyoto, Japan, just arrived from Tokyo today via Shinkansen train. The weather is quite cloudy with some rain, and humidity. I'll try to post some akb/japan pix after i get back. I went back to the akb building again for the third time. They were again having a live performance just past the double main doors. There were two flat screen tv's showing the girls of their live performance for those that couldn't and unable to get tickets. The girls weren't very clear on the tv screen, and not sure if that was planned or just because. Anyhow, it was cool hearing them in the next room. ---------------------- Kyoto, worth visiting, Golden Pavillion, Imperial Palace, Kyomizu temple and the Gion District, and of course anywhere in Tokyo and rest of Japan. I will try to post some pix of my trip after i get back.
just got back from my 3rd visit to Japan, awesome! and tons of pictures to post up, including Akihabara!
